General Description:
Large White pigs are a prominent breed in South Africa, known for their impressive size, rapid growth, and efficient feed conversion. Originating from Yorkshire, England, they have become a well-established breed globally. In South Africa, they are highly valued for their adaptability to various climates, excellent mothering abilities, and lean, flavorful pork. These pigs are often used in crossbreeding programs to improve the traits of other breeds.

Farmers Note:
As a first-time pig farmer/breeder, we have started with 2 piglets: a large white guilt and a Landrace guilt. Our little piggies are both free-range and are currently around 5 months and 4 months old. What I can say about them is that they are extremely intelligent (the older one learned how to sit on command on the first night we got her), love to run and play, don’t eat a lot (the same amount as a large dog), can help keep the lawn short, and are extremely loveable when you earn their trust. If you are willing to dedicate a few days, you can quickly earn their trust, and they absolutely love belly scratches. Our piglets are only going to be breeder pigs, and we will sell off their young. But a quick word of advice: just because your animal might become meat one day does not mean they need to be wild and scared of humans; give them the love and respect they deserve to help put food on your table!
Here are some qualities farmers and consumers might need to know:
- Size: Boars can reach up to 450 kg, while sows weigh around 350 kg, providing more meat per pig.
- Growth: These pigs grow rapidly, with boars maturing in 8-10 months and sows in 7-9 months.
- Feed Conversion: They efficiently convert feed into meat, making them economical to raise.
- Adaptability: They thrive in various climates and conditions, from cold winters to hot summers.
- Mothering: Sows are known for their large litters and excellent mothering instincts.
- Temperament: Generally docile and easy to handle. Also male excellent pets when considering breeding
