Babies have amazing survival instincts!
Did you know that babies can breathe and swallow at the same time? This is an amazing ability that we lose as we grow older.
Babies can breathe and swallow at the same time because they have a different anatomy than adults. Their larynx, or voice box, is higher up in their throat, and their epiglottis, a flap of tissue that covers the airway when swallowing, is more flexible and elongated. This means that the airway and the food pipe are more separated in babies, allowing them to breathe through their nose while sucking milk from their mother’s breast or a bottle.
This ability is very important for babies, as it helps them to feed efficiently and avoid choking. It also allows them to regulate their breathing and heart rate during feeding, which is essential for their development and survival. Babies can breathe and swallow at the same time for about six months until they start to eat solid foods and learn to speak. As they grow, their larynx descends and their epiglottis shortens, making their airway and food pipe more connected. This means that they have to coordinate their breathing and swallowing and stop breathing momentarily when they swallow.
